This year we will be basing our 'twixt-mas' holiday in the picturesque village of Alfriston, perfectly located amongst the rolling hills of the South Downs in East Sussex. If you have family or work commitments over Christmas and New Year this could be the festive break for you.
This holiday will provide the opportunity for some superb downland walking in England’s newest National Park. When the air is cold and clear there is no better place to be than enjoying the view from the rolling escarpment of the South Downs. The short cropped grass which drapes over the hills like velvet makes for excellent underfoot conditions and the views over the coast, and inland across the Weald are wonderful. Our walks will take us along the clifftop path above Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, through the Birling Gap and along the Cuckmere Valley, up to the exhilarating summit of Firle Beacon and inland to visit the Wilmington Long Man.
The holiday will commence with dinner on the evening of Thursday 27th December and finish after a lunch of hearty soup and sandwiches on Sunday 30th December.
We stay at Deans Place Country Hotel in Alfriston. Deans Place is a beautiful 14th century building surrounded by four acres of lawns and gardens. The hotel offers a warm welcome, excellent service and beautifully-appointed ensuite bedrooms. Harcourts Restaurant, which prides itself on the use of the finest local produce, hold two AA Rosettes for the excellence of its food and service.
