The Cumbria Way is a 70 mile (112km) walk which provides an excellent introduction to the splendours of the Lake District. Every bend of the path on this magnificent walk offers a new and breathtaking view. This year we shall walk the route from north to south, starting in the historic city of Carlisle and finishing in Ulverston on Morecambe Bay.
The route out of Carlisle traverses the rich Cumbrian farmland bordering the River Cardew to reach the outlying fells of the northern Lake District. These fells are remote and wild and the White Water Dash waterfall to the north of Skiddaw is one of the highlights of the walk. As the walk progresses southwards through the Lake District highlights encountered include the beauty of Derwentwater and Borrowdale, the climb along the side of Langstrath Beck, the crossing of Stake Pass into Langdale, the views from Beacon Hill back towards Coniston and the surrounding fells, and the views of Morecambe Bay from the descent to Ulverston.
At the end of the third stage there will be the opportunity to complete a wonderful four mile loop above Borrowdale which takes in Watendlath Tarn and Ashness Bridge, two of Lakeland’s best loved beauty spots. This loop has been included in the chart mileage.
