East Highland Way

8 days walking, based in Newtonmore

Our tour base

The East Highland Way is a 78 mile (125km) walk from Fort William on the west coast of Scotland to Aviemore in the Cairngorm mountains. It provides not only an excellent highland excursion but also a link between the northern end of the West Highland Way and the southern end of the Speyside Way.

The route heads east from Fort William to the village of Spean Bridge, along the banks of the River Spean to An Dubh Lochan and the shore of Loch Laggan. From Laggan Dam the route works its way along the valley of the River Pattack to Feagour, then over high ground to Laggan Village and Cluny Castle. A path to the north then leads through Strath an Eilich and down into Glen Banchor. A path along the banks of the river Calder eventually leads into Newtonmore, our base for this holiday. From Newtonmore the route visits Kingussie and the ruins of the Ruthven Barracks before skirting the Insh Marshes and Insh Loch to Kincraig. Beyond Kincraig the route passes through the Inshriach National Nature Reserve and around the shores of Loch Gamhna and Loch an Eilein before making a final approach to Aviemore and the end of the walk.

During the course of the walk you will pass through varied landscapes; remote moorland, deciduous woodlands, riverside paths, tranquil loch-side trails, pristine marshlands and ancient Caledonian forests. If you are lucky you will spot red squirrels, golden eagles, osprey, buzzards, kestrels, black grouse, red deer, woodpeckers, pine martens, Capercaillie and Scottish crossbills. Although you are unlikely to spot them you will also be passing through the territory patrolled by Higlands' most elusive resident, the Scottish wildcat.

Highlights of the East Highland Way will include the view of Ben Nevis from Fort William; the Commando Memorial above Spean Bridge (off route, but we shall make sure to visit); the Falls of Pattack; Fort Dun da Lamh; the ruins of Ruthven Barracks; Inshriach National Nature Reserve, one of the last remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forests; and Loch an Eilein Castle.
