The Herriot Way is a 52 mile (83km) walk based upon a memorable holiday taken by a Yorkshire Vet, James Herriot, and his son and visits many of the places described in his book “James Herriot’s Yorkshire”. The route devised by Norman Scholes was intended to be walked over four days using the Youth Hostels at Aysgarth, Keld, Grinton and Hawes, but because we have decided to complete the walk over five days we will have to detour down to the motor road at Gunnerside at the end of day three and the beginning of day four, thereby extending the walk by five miles.
The Herriot Way explores Swaledale and Wensleydale by a route which takes in a wonderful variety of scenery. In the north the route passes over the Melbeck Moors where the remains of a once thriving lead mining industry lie scatterted amongst the heather; in the south it parallels the River Ure as it runs through Wensleydale from Hawes to Aysgarth; in the east it visits Bolton Castle before crossing into Apedale and contouring around the flanks of Gibon Hill and Harkerside Moor to the picturesque village of Reeth, and in the west it follows the Pennine Way over Great Shunner Fell, at 2349ft (716m) the highest point on the walk.
Highlights of the Herriot Way will include Aysgarth Falls, where the River Ure thunders over a series of shallow rock shelves; Bolton Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1568; the crossing of Kisdon Hill from Keld to Thwaite; thevViews (weather permitting) from Great Shunner Fell, Hardraw Force, the highest single drop waterfall in England; the village green in Reeth; the tearooms in Askrigg; the attractive villages of Gunnerside, Keld and Thwaite; and the bustling market town of Hawes, our base for this holiday.
Highlights of the Copper Trail will include the Cheesewrings, dramatic rock formations near Minions; Golitha Falls and the cool green valley of the River Fowey; Tethevy Quoit, one of Cornwall's oldest man-made structures; Ladyvale Bridge, an ancient clapper bridge in Cardinham Woods; the delightful moorland village of St Breward; the view of Brown Willy from the summit of Rough Tor; and The Hurlers stone circle.
