Nidderdale Way

5 days walking, based in Ripon

Our tour base

The Nidderdale Way is a 53 mile (85km) elongated 'circular' route through the upper reaches of the valley of the River Nidd. Nidderdale lies just outside the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but is protected by its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The route of the Nidderdale Way lies almost wholly within the AONB.

The landscape in Nidderdale is wonderfully varied. The River Nidd was dammed close to its source in the early 1900's and the three reservoirs are surrounded by high heather moorland. Lower down the valley the landscape is one of hay meadows interspersed with ancient deciduous woodland and stone-built villages. In places the river runs underground, or through deep limestone gorges such as How Stean Gorge. On the hillside above the valley, where the meadows meet the moorland, there are outcrops of exposed gritstone and at the end of the first stage we shall detour off the Nidderdale Way to visit Brimham Rocks (National Trust) where the outcrop has been weathered into weird and wonderful shapes.

Highlights of the Nidderdale Way will include the rock formations and views from the escarpment at Brimham Rocks; the view from the Panorama Walk above Pateley Bridge; Wath packhorse bridge; the paths through Low Wood and Strikes Wood; the views from the path along the crest of Guise Cliff; the flagged path through the birch woods below Reynards Crag; and the delightful villages of Ripley, Wath and Ramsgill.
