Wylye Way

4 days walking, based in Warminster

Our tour base

The Wylye Way is a 35 mile (56km) walk which follows the course of the beautiful River Wylye from the National Trust's Stourhead Estate, close to the source of the river, to Wilton House in Salisbury where the Wylye flows into the River Nadder.

At the suggestion of the creator of the route, Bill Brown, we have also added an 8 mile (13km) loop which will take in views of the upper Wylye Valley from the adjacent high ground of Long Knoll before dropping down through the Stourhead estate to the true start of the Wylye Way.

The River Wylye is one of England's premier chalk streams, famed for its crystal-clear waters, verdant riverside flora and abundant stocks of native brown trout and grayling. During its course the river passes through a landscape of chalk downland, watermeadows and picturesque thatched villages with ancient churches. For the most part the route follows a network of footpath, bridleways and farm tracks to stay close to the river, but occasionally, where no riverside rights-of-way exist, it takes to the high ground above the river for glorious views and wonderful variety.

Highlights of the Wylye Way will include the views from the downland ridge of Long Knoll; the walk through Six Wells Bottom on the Stourhead estate; White Sheet Hill and the descent into the Deverills Valley; the elegant houses old houses which line the high street in Heytesbury; the handsome Tudor manor house and ancient church at Knook; the picturesque thatched cottages beside the river in Sherrington and Fisherton de la Mere; the Bread Stones at Great Wishford which record the prices of bread over the decades since 1800; the beech avenue and carpets of bluebells in Grovely Woods; and the Palladian bridge in the grounds of Wilton House.
