This holiday combines two routes into one linear walk, providing 123kms (76 miles) of relaxed walking through the Norfolk countryside. The cathedral city of Norwich, ur base for this holiday, lies at the mid-point of the walk.
The Boudicca Way (62kms/38 miles) explores the quiet rural countryside of South Norfolk between Diss and Norwich which was controlled by the Iceni tribe during the late Iron Age and during the early years of the Roman occupation. It passes through the peaceful villages of Shimpling, Pulham Market, Tasburgh, Saxlingham, each with its quaint brick and flint church, and makes a short diversion to visit the Roman town of Venta Icenorum on the outskirts of the village of Caistor St Edmund, before reaching the outskirts of Norwich.
The Wherryman’s Way (62kms/38 miles) provides a wonderful contrast as it heads eastwards from Norwich to follow the River Yare through The Broads National Park to the coastal seaside town of Great Yarmouth. The meandering route follows passes through the idyllic villages of Surlingham, Rockland St Mary, Loddon and Reedham, and across Rockland Marsh, Langley Marsh, Reedham Marsh and Berney Marsh.
Highlights of the holiday include the picturesque Pulham Market, where the church, inns and thatched cottages cluster around the village green; Tyrell Wood Nature Reserve; Tasburgh church with its simple round Saxon tower; wild orchids on Shottesham Common; the Roman town of Venta Icenorum; Hardley Cross; the tiny church at Heckingham, with its thatched roof and octagonal flint tower; crossing the River Yare on the Reedham Ferry; Reedham’s riverside inns; the Berney Arms Windmill; the sight of cows grazing the marshes; distant sightings of Norwich Cathedral spire; and, hopefully, the sight of a traditional trading wherry on the river.
