A Dartmoor Traverse
Total distance covered; 65 miles (105kms)
6 days walking, based in Moretonhampstead
For years we have felt that none of the Long Distance Paths which cross Dartmoor really do it justice. 2017 marks fifty years since Ian’s first walk on the moors, so we thought it would be the perfect time to come up with our own route; A Dartmoor Traverse, sixty five miles of superb walking through ‘southern England’s last wilderness’.
We will showcase the many contrasting aspects of Dartmoor; green wooded valleys with tumbling streams, surreal granite rock formations, prehistoric stone circles and stone rows, ancient forests, idyllic villages and the wild, high moor with its unique atmosphere.
Following a broad arc across Dartmoor, from Yelverton to Lydford, our walk picks out hidden gems such as Meavy, Sheepstor, Drizzlecombe, Eylesbarrow, and Hexworthy as well as the world-famous landmarks such as Haytor, Houndtor, Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Dartmeet, Lustleigh, Bowerman’s Nose and Postbridge. We will also visit the ancient site at Grimspound and Wistman’s Wood, one of the last vestiges of Primeval forest.
The timing of the holiday should see the moor ablaze with purple heather and golden gorse.
