St Cuthbert's Way is a classic 62 mile (100km) excursion which commences at the fine abbey town of Melrose, close to where St Cuthbert began his ministry in around 650AD, and reaches its terminus on Holy Island, where he later became Prior of Lindisfarne. During his lifetime St Cuthbert travelled widely spreading the gospel, and after his death his body was removed from Lindisfarne by devoted monks fleeing from the Vikings. The route of our walk ties together some of the places associated with St Cuthbert’s story.

View across the Tweed Valley to the twin peaks of the Eildon Hills

St Cuthbert's Way begins in the handsome border town of Melrose on the River Tweed and crosses the Eildon Hills, much loved by Sir Walter Scott, a former resident of Melrose. The Eildons afford magnificent views over the border country. The route follows the river Tweed past famous Dryburgh Abbey and from the village of Maxton follows Dere Street Roman Road across Ancrum Moor before crossing the river Teviot near Jedburgh. The Way traverses the rolling Borders landscape passing close to Kelso and through Kirk Yetholm before crossing the border into Northumberland. The route then travels through the Cheviot Hills and Northumberland’s Fell Sandstone Country before crossing the causeway to Holy Island, and the end of the walk.

View out into a pine forest from the mouth of St Cuthbert's Cave

Highlights include graceful red sandstone ruins of Melrose Abbey, the view from the summit of the Eildon Hills, Dryburgh Abbey, the crossing of Wideopen Hill (the highest point on the route), Kirk Yetholm and the rendezvous with the Pennine way, the views of Yeavering Bell in the Cheviot Hills, the town of Wooler, St Cuthbert's Cave, the atmospheric crossing of the causeway to Lindisfarne, and the ruins of Lindisfarne's Benedictine priory.
