The route runs from Mow Cop, where the eccentric owner of Roe Hall built a sham castle to enhance the view from his home, through the rugged gritstone hills south of Congleton, over ‘The Cloud’, and along the shore of Rudyard Reservoir. It turns south to follow the River Churnet as it runs through a rolling landscape of low hills and deciduous woodland, and then along a stretch of the Trent & Mersey Canal to Great Haywood and Shugborough Hall. A walk across Cannock Chase (England’s smallest AONB – Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) leads into an area rich in grand homes and landscaped parkland; Longnor Hall, Chillington Hall, Gunstone Hall, Wrottesley Hall, to conclude with a walk along Kinver Edge to the county border.
