The Herriot Way is a 52 mile (84km) walk through the Yorkshire Dales, based upon a memorable holiday taken by a Yorkshire Vet, James Herriot, and his son. It visits many of the places described in his book “James Herriot’s Yorkshire”. In the north the route passes over the Melbeck Moors; in the south it parallels the River Ure through Wensleydale from Hawes to Aysgarth; in the east it visits Bolton Castle before crossing into Apedale and contouring around the flanks of Gibon Hill and Harkerside Moor to Reeth, and in the west it follows the Pennine Way over Great Shunner Fell.

Wensleydale and Swaledale provide a wonderful blend of wild moorland, peaceful valleys, flower-filled haymeadows, springy limestone pasture, and dramatic waterfalls. The man-made features in this wonderful countryside - dry stone walls, barns, and stone-built villages - blend perfectly with the landscape and only serve to enhance the feeling of timelessness and solitude.

Highlights of The Herriot Way include Hardraw Force, Aysgarth Falls, Surrender Bridge and the Old Gang Mines, the village of Keld nestling below Kisdon Hill, the delightful tearoom at Thwaite, and Great Shunner Fell at 2349ft (716m) the highest point on the walk.
