Oasthouses

Oasthouses

The first half of the walk commemorates the advance of the invading army of William of Normandy from its landing point at Pevensey to Battle Abbey, site of his victory over the Saxon King Harold in 1066.

Enroute from Pevensey Castle to Battle Abbey the Walk passes 15th century Herstmonceux Castle. Beyond Battle the walk takes us through some attractive rolling countryside dotted with orchards, clumps of deciduous woodland, quaint villages and the distinctive twin cones of oasthouses. It visits the hilltop town of Winchelsea before terminating at the fascinating town of Rye, with its mix of Elizabethan and Georgian architecture, and a maritime history which reflects its former role as one of the Cinque Ports. At an average of 10 miles (16 kms) per day, over mostly easy terrain, the walking is never hurried and gives us time to explore the fascinating towns, villages, churches and castles along the way.
