Borders Abbeys Way

6 days walking based in Melrose

Our tour base

Border regions are always full of historical and architectural interest. Wealth gained through cross border trade, the desire to flaunt that wealth, and the need to fortify against possible attack, all play a part in sculpting the landscape. The Borders Abbeys Way is a newly established 65 mile (104km) route which links the splendid ruins of the four great 12th century abbeys at Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose and Dryburgh.

The walking in the Scottish Borders is superb and the route of the Borders Abbeys Way takes in some wonderful scenery as it follows old drovers' roads, footpaths, undulating tracks and Dere Street Roman road, over moorland, common land, along riverbanks, across pastures and through woodland and parkland. Highlights of the walk include some wonderful stretches of the River Tweed and the River Teviot, the view of the Eildon Hills from Cauldshiels Loch, views across to the Waterloo Monument on Peniel Heugh and of Smailholm Tower, the view of the Cheviot Hills from the Bishop's Stone, Roxburgh Viaduct, and, of course, the four abbeys and the historic market towns in which they stand.
