From Crantock, on the bank of the River Gannel, the route takes us around Penhale to Perran Sands, a magnificent stretch of Atlantic strand. Beyond Perranporth the spectacular cliffs of St Agnes, Chapel Porth and Hell’s Mouth lead to the shores of St Ives Bay. From St Ives westwards we walk around the West Penwith peninsula - Cornwall’s Celtic heartland - where the views inland across a landscape rich in Bronze Age field systems and pre-historic megaliths are as inspiring as those on the seaward side.

We visit mysterious Zennor and the headlands of Bosigran, Pendeen Watch and Cape Cornwall, before rounding Land’s End to reach the comparative tranquillity of the southern shores of the peninsula. The route to Penzance takes us through the idyllic coves of Porthcurno, Penberth and Lamorna as well as the atmospheric little fishing village of Mousehole.

We miss out the five mile stretch from Hayle to St Ives as this is largely motor road.
