Cornish Coast Path - St Ives
St Ives, our base for this section of the Cornwall Coast Path, is a former pilchard fishing port located on the north side of the Land’s End peninsula. It is said to be named after the 5th century St Ia who came to Cornwall from Ireland and built a chapel on the headland immediately to the west of the town. A mediaeval fishermans’ chapel dedicated to St Nicholas now stands on the site.
Narrow streets lined with picturesque colourwashed cottages surround the attractive harbour and there are fine sandy beaches on either side of the harbour. During the 19th century St Ives became a magnet for artists, and is now home to numerous small galleries, and a branch of the Tate Gallery. The world-famous Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is an integral part of the Tate Gallery.
St Ives has an excellent range of shops, restaurants and pubs serving food in the evening.
The daily meeting point is the Malakoff (the raised area with seating, above Porthminster Beach and the railway station ) in St Ives.
