Herriot Way

5 days walking, based at Hawes

Our tour base

The Herriot Way is a Long Distance Path based upon a holiday taken by James Herriot and his son, and described in the book 'James Herriot's Yorkshire'. It makes a wonderful introduction to the delights of Wensleydale and Swaledale. We walk from the old market town of Hawes to Aysgarth where the River Ure tumbles over a series of waterfalls. The route passes Bolton Castle and crosses Grinton Moor to descend into Swaledale and visits the beautiful villages of Reeth, Gunnerside, Muker and Thwaite. The route then crosses Great Shunner Fell, with its far-reaching views of the surrounding countryside, before returning to Hawes by way of Hardraw Force, the highest single span waterfall in England.
