Mortimer Trail

3 days walking, based in Ludlow

Our tour base

The Mortimer Trail is a 30 mile (48km) route through the quiet borderlands of England and Wales, from the market town of Kington to the fine fortified town of Ludlow - capital of the Marches. The trail takes its name from the powerful Mortimer family who dominated the Marches throughout the Mediaeval period, during which time the area was far from tranquil.

Welsh Marches

Welsh Marches - Wales Tourist Board

The Mortimer Trail follows an undulating course as climbs onto high ridges with outstanding views of the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills and the Black Mountains of South Wales, and drops into the valleys of the rivers, Arrow, Lugg and Teme.

The landscape is varied with limestone edges, airy sheep pasture, light deciduous woodland, stands of Scots pine, river valleys rich in wildlife, orchards and common grazing land. The wildlife of the area includes numerous birds of prey, ravens, herons, kingfishers, woodland birds, deer and otters, whilst Iron Age hillforts, ruined castles, the earthwork of Offa's Dyke, and isolated farmsteads are evidence of the area's human heritage. The whole makes a very satisfying insight into one of Britain's lesser known areas.
