East Devon’s Jurassic Coast

Devon and Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is an area of immense ecological and geological importance and has the distinction of UNESCO World Heritage status. The stretch of coast from Exmouth eastwards to Seaton is famed for its dramatic red sandstone cliffs which dominate the landscape, draw the eye, and make the sea and sky appear improbably blue.

Geology can be experienced at every turn. At Budleigh Salterton enormous pebbles 440 million years old litter the foot of the cliffs, at Ladram Bay the dramatic stacks reveal Triassic deserts and salt lakes, and at Beer a quirk of geological fate sees the red sandstone cliffs give way to towering white chalk laid down during the Cretaceous Period, over 70 million years ago.

Seabirds in their thousands can be seen along the cliffs of East Devon. At Ladram Bay the offshore seastacks are a favourite nesting ground and close enough to the mainland to allow a clear view of the gulls from the clifftop path. As you walk along you will see cormorants sitting on the rocks to dry their wings after diving, wading birds working the shoreline, and larks climbing above the clifftop grassland.

Your walks will take you along some magnificent stretches of the East Devon Coast. You will visit Ladram Bay to view the seastacks, cross the estuary of the River Otter where wading birds work the mudflats and marshy ground, and enjoy the extensive views from the top of Salcombe Hill Cliff above Sidmouth. You will also visit the attractive coastal villages of Budleigh Salterton, Salcombe Regis and Branscombe.

Your short break on the East Devon Coast will be based at Hunter's Moon Hotel in the genteel seaside resort of Sidmouth. This family-owned and run hotel is quietly located in its own peaceful gardens and provides comfortable accommodation in well-appointed rooms, and a high standard of cuisine.
