The Pembrokeshire Coast

Situated on the wild west coast of Wales, Britain's only coastal National Park provides fantastic walking along a coastline characterised by rugged cliffs and pristine sandy beaches. Offshore islands appear to float on the sparkling seas and rocky tors crown each headland. Views across to the islands of Ramsey and Skomer are a constant feature of the walks.

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs right around the St David’s peninsula, dropping down into hidden coves and rising up onto the clifftops for magnificent views along the coast. The villages around the coast are unspoilt, and a good deal quieter than they would have been several centuries ago when the quarrying and shipping of slate was a major industry. Along the clifftops Iron Age field systems, burial chambers and earthworks provide evidence of early habitation. The ‘city’ of St David’s, no more than a village in size, was the birthplace of St David, the patron saint of Wales, and a place of pilgrimage since the 6th century. The present cathedral, which dates from the 12th century, lies in a grassy hollow below the city and close to the tranquil ruins of the Bishops’ Palace.

The rugged cliffs provide a home for a huge variety of sea birds and from the spring to the autumn the path is a blaze of colour with the myriad species of wild flowers which flourish in the mild south westerly breezes. Seals bask on the rocks below the lifeboat station at St Justinian and porpoise belt through the waves of the fierce tidal channel that separates the mainland from Ramsey Island.

Your first walk will take you from the golden sweep of Whitesands Bay to Point St John, past the ruined chapel and lifeboat station at St Justinian, and around the headland of Penmaen Melyn where the sea boils over ‘The Bitches’, to the natural harbour of Porth Clais, St David’s ancient seaport. For the second walk you will leave St David’s past St Non’s Well and follow an exhilarating stretch of coast to Solva with its charming fjord-like harbour.

Your short break on the Pembrokeshire Coast will be based at the Grove Hotel which stands in a quiet location at one end of the high street in the little cathedral ‘city’ of St David’s. The regency-style hotel has a beautiful walled garden and a sunny patio area which makes the perfect place to relax. The well-appointed rooms are tastefully furnished and the restaurant serves good food with the option to choose from either the table d'hote menu or the bar menu.
