South Devon Coast

The coast of the South Hams of Devon is blessed with more than its share of scenic grandeur and variety. Not only does it possess a rugged coastline with magnificent cliffs and rocky headlands but look inland and you will see a luxuriant patchwork of fields and woodland, valleys and hills, which runs right down to the coast. The climate of the South Hams is so mild that in Salcombe, the most southerly resort in England, oranges and lemons can be grown out of doors. The entire area exudes a feeling of prosperity and plenty.

The rivers which rise on Dartmoor reach the sea in South Devon and the wooded valleys, or rias, formed by the rivers open out into shallow estuaries as they meet the coast. The River Dart, which reaches the sea at Dartmouth, has steep wooded banks and the views across the estuary from Dartmouth to the village of Kingswear are particularly beautiful. Between the estuaries rugged cliffs rise from the sea and form a series of massive headlands, interspersed with sweeping sandy beaches and isolated coves.

A profusion of wild coastal flowers carpets the clifftops in spring and wild raspberries grow beside the Coast Path in summer. Seabirds nest on the cliffs and songbirds live amongst the bramble hedges and coconut-scented gorse. At Coleton Fishacre Garden wild flowers mingle with azaleas, camellias and exotic species in a wonderful valley garden which hangs above the coast and affords wonderful views out to sea.

Your walks will take you around the magnificent promontories of Bolt Tail and Bolt Head, through the charming thatched village of Hope Cove; onto the beautiful sandy beach at Soar Mill Cove, through the historic town of Dartmouth, along the switch-back Coast Path to Coleton Fishacre, and amidst the cheerful bustle of Salcombe, where the whitewashed houses and colourful boats give the town a Mediterranean feel.

You will stay at Stoke Lodge Hotel, a fine country house-style hotel located in its own grounds within the attractive coastal village of Stoke Fleming. Stoke Lodge provides comfortable well-appointed accommodation and excellent food carefully prepared using the finest local produce.
