The Scottish Borders

The rolling green hills of the Scottish Borders have much to offer the walker - a fine salmon river, historic abbeys and castles, extensive views from the hill tops, fresh air, peace and quiet. This is a green and fertile region of Scotland, the towns and villages are as attractive as their surroundings and the hedgerows are glorious. Depending upon the season they are laced with hawthorn, festooned in wild roses, dripping with wild raspberries and bright with flowers. In late summer the hills are covered in a mantle of purple heather. Salmon and trout leap in the Tweed, grouse call on the high moors and the sheep graze on the hillsides.

Three of Scotland’s finest Long Distance Paths, the Southern Upland Way, St Cuthbert’s Way and the Borders Abbeys Way meet at Melrose so your walks will include some fine stretches of these well-maintained and superbly waymarked paths. Highlights will include Melrose and Dryburgh Abbeys; the sweep of the River Tweed past Abbotsford House, lonely Cauldshiels Loch; and, above all, the lofty viewpoint of the Eildon Hills.

You will stay at the superbly appointed Burt’s Hotel which faces onto the Market Square in Melrose. As well as providing exceptionally comfortable accommodation Burt’s boasts an award-winning restaurant with two sought-after AA Rosettes for it’s food and standards of service. The restaurant prides itself on the use of fresh local produce and is particularly renown for serving wonderful local game, succulant Scottish beef and salmon fresh from the River Tweed.
