Coleridge Way
Total distance covered; 52 miles (84kms)
5 days walking, based in Lynmouth
The Coleridge Way is an exhilarating 52 mile (84km) walk through the Quantock Hills (Britain’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), the Brendon Hills and Exmoor National Park. The route celebrates the association of the romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge with the airy ridges, wooded valleys and hilltop vistas which inspired much of his work.

The route begins at Nether Stowey, Coleridge’s former home, and works its way westwards, traversing the whaleback ridge of the Quantocks and exploring the idyllic combes which cut into the flanks of the hills. From Bicknoller, one of the areas most attractive villages, it crosses the Brendon Hills to Wheddon Cross and then takes a superb route across Exmoor, via Webber’s Post, the East Water Valley, Doverhay Hill, Porlock. Malmesmead, Watersmeet and Myrtleberry Cleave to its conclusion in Lynmouth.

Highlights include the walk around the steep flank of Dowsborough hill fort and over Woodlands Hill, the expansive views across Bridgewater Bay from the flank of East Quantoxhead, the view up onto Dunkery Beacon (the highest point in Exmoor), the tranquil walk through Horner Woods, the little harbour at Porlock Weir, the magnificent views across Culbone Woods from the Worthy Toll Road, the walk through Ashton Cleave from Oare to Brendon, the waterfalls at Watersmeet and the spectacular walk through Myrtleberry Cleave to emerge above Lynmouth at the end of the walk.
Beautiful villages visited along the way include Nether Stowey, Holford, Bicknoller, Sampford Brett, Wheddon Cross, Horner, Porlock Weir, Malmesmead, Brendon and Rockford.
