Wells, our base for the Mendip Way, is England's smallest city. The city is located close to the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, with the Somerset Levels to the south and west. A Roman settlement grew up on the site where springs bubbled up providing a reliable source of fresh drinking water. Those springs gave Wells its name and can still be seen in the grounds of the Bishop's Palace.
Wells is dominated by its magnificent cathedral and the city is steeped in ecclesiastical history. As well as the cathedral itself there is a splendid medieval Bishop's Palace and Gardens, the ancient parish church of St Cuthbert, and the Vicars' Close, a beautifully preserved street of houses that dates back to the 14th century. The city also has an excellent museum and interesting independent shops line the narrow medieval streets.
Wells offers a range of services, including restaurants, inns and bistros which serve food in the evening. It also has a number of shops where one can purchase the makings of a packed lunch.
The daily meeting point in Wells will be the coach station (opposite Tesco) on Princes Road.
