Total distance covered; 97 miles (154kms)
8 days walking, based in Stafford
This 154kms (97 miles) walk spans the length of the county, from north to south, exploring some outstanding rural scenery, interesting market towns and villages, heritage sites and landscaped parkland.
The route runs from Mow Cop, where the eccentric owner of Roe Hall built a sham castle to enhance the view from his home, through the rugged gritstone hills south of Congleton, over ‘The Cloud’, and along the shore of Rudyard Reservoir. It turns south to follow the River Churnet as it runs through a rolling landscape of low hills and deciduous woodland, and then along a stretch of the Trent & Mersey Canal to Great Haywood and Shugborough Hall. A walk across Cannock Chase (England’s smallest AONB – Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) leads into an area rich in grand homes and landscaped parkland; Longnor Hall, Chillington Hall, Gunstone Hall, Wrottesley Hall, to conclude with a walk along Kinver Edge to the county border.
Highlights include the ‘Old Man of Mow’ (stone pillar), the views to the west from Congleton Edge and 360˚views over the Welsh Borders, Peak District and Merseyside from ‘The Cloud’, wildlife spotting on Rudyard Reservoir, the fully restored Cheddleton Flint Mill, Froghall Wharf, Hawksmoor Nature Reserve, the views from Toothill Rock, the Roman and medieval remains at Rocester, the ancient church at Abbots Bromley, the Essex packhorse bridge, the views of Shugborough Hall and Chillington Hall across their landscaped parklands, the ‘rock houses’ cut into the sandstone of Kinver Edge, and the views of the Malvern Hills from Kinver Edge itself.
