Northumberland Coast Path and Berwickshire Coast Path

7 days walking, based in Berwick-upon-Tweed

Our tour base

The dramatic and varied landscape of the Northumberland and Berwickshire coastlines makes this a wonderful area in which to walk. The combined distance of the Northumberland Coast Path (Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed) and the Berwickshire Coast Path (Berwick to St Abbs Head) is 80 miles, and the scenery, as befits an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is superb throughout. Sweeping sandy beaches, rolling dunes, rugged cliffs, and evocative vistas of castles on headlands, combine with the intimacy of picturesque fishing villages.

South of Bamburgh the route hugs the coast then, to avoid the treacherous tidal mudflats around Budle Bay and Fenham Flats, heads inland to higher ground which offers superb views across to Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands. The route returns to the coast at Fenwick.

Highlights of the walk include the iconic views of Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Lindisfarne; the unspoilt harbours at Craster and St Abbs; the villages of Low-Newton-by-the-Sea and Bamburgh; some wonderful sand dunes systems and wildlife-rich mudflats; the fortified border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, and the stunning cliff scenery of St Abbs Head - a fitting climax to our walk.
