Shropshire Hills
This marvellous landscape, little-known even in Britain despite being designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty', lies close to the Welsh border and provides walking for the connoisseur. Much of the area is owned and managed by the National Trust and the quiet hillsides, draped in heather, bilberry, and springy grass, are laced with tumbling streams and hidden coombes.
The walks we have selected take full advantage of this superb area, and guests will be able to enjoy the rocky ridge of the Stiperstones (a National Nature Reserve famous for its legends of devilry and witchcraft); a traverse of the plateau of the heather-covered Long Mynd; the exhilarating views from the whale-back ridges of Lawley and Caer Caradoc; wooded Wenlock Edge with its views across to the Long Mynd; the Elizabethan manor house at Wilderhope; and Stokesay Castle, the finest and best preserved medieval fortified manor house in England.
Accommodation
Unless you ask us to customise your trip, and choose alternative accommodation, your holiday in Shropshire will be based at a comfortable family-run guest house in Bishop's Castle. Your room will have ensuite bathroom facilities and you will have a choice of continental or full English breakfast. Bishop's Castle has a number of restaurants and pubs serving meals in the evening, and two micro-breweries, one of which is the oldest working brewery in Britain. Bishop's Castle participates in the 'Walkers are Welcome' scheme.
If you prefer hotel accommodation we can arrange a room at the characterful Castle Hotel, a Georgian coaching inn which sits in an elevated position alongside the ruins of Bishop's Castle's medieval castle. All of the standard and master bedrooms have a view over either the town and surrounding hills or the attractive terraced hotel gardens. The additional cost for accommodation at the Castle Hotel will depend upon the room type chosen and whether you wish to include evening meals in the hotel restaurant.
